Presenting ethnography in the requirements process

چکیده
In this paper we argue that the industrial development of interactive systems has to recognise the social dimension of work if these systems are to fully meet the real needs of their users. Under current approaches this depends on whether an individual requirements engineer implicitly applies a user-centred approach, recognises the importance of cooperation and is sufficiently sympathetic and intuitive to understand the work and reflect this in the system requirements. We wish to move beyond this by allowing for the provision of a more systematic incorporation of the social dimensions of work. To this end we focus on developing a novel approach to the presentation of ethnographic material. Our approach is based on the use of number of viewpoints and is embodied within a general hypertext tool.

Ethnography and Design?
We consider the role of ‘workplace studies’ in design and specifically, what it means to use ethnography to ‘inform’ design. We suggest that there is a need for a foundational change in the configuration of the practical relationship between ethnography and design if the approach is to be of lasting utility: from the traditional product-oriented configuration where ethnography attempts to infor...
متن کاملEach Sold Separately: Ethnography as a Tool for Integrating Online and Off line Use of Educational Toys
This paper describes the contributions of rapid ethnography to the design of a web-enabled educational toy, specifically installation and registration. While HCI practitioners increasingly advocate rapid ethnography for early discovery and requirements phases, we discuss the role played by ethnography that spans open ended observation, story telling, conceptual design and iterative prototype ev...

متن کاملEthnography and measurement in mental health: qualitative validation of a measure of continuity of care (CONNECT).
Ethnography contributes to measure development by enhancing validity and providing a basis for qualitative validation. Validating research measures means making cases for their "trustworthiness." The authors argue for the trustworthiness of CONNECT, a measure of continuity of care, by presenting the interpretive logic through which they elaborated continuity for measure construction purposes. متن کاملRequirements Engineering for Cooperative Systems
This paper addresses the problem of ‘production-quality’ CSCW software development where software is developed from an agreed statement of the system requirements. In particular, we are concerned with ways in which requirements specifications for CSCW systems can be developed and with the integration of ethnography into traditional specification methods. Existing approaches to requirements engi...
